LAND HERMIT CRABS
Land hermit crabs (also called hermit tree crabs), are crustaceans. The name "hermit" as applied to our crabs is misleading because in the wild, they live in groups and usually travel in large packs that roam the shorelines at ' night in search for food. Hermit crabs, for the most part are nocturnal. Hermit crabs are unbelievable climbers and are not aggressive. Crabs of different sizes can be kept together.

Hermit crabs often come out of their shell to explore empty shells around them. Try providing empty shells with round verses, elongated openings that are slightly larger than your crab's current shell. Hermit crabs are omnivorous. They should be given a commercially prepared food as part of their stable diet. Crabs also like bread, crackers, lettuce, apples, oatmeal, cornmeal, dry dog food and cookies.

Remove spoiled food immediately. Don't worry if it seems that your crabs are not eating because they can go for long periods without eating. Water is a necessity; a heavy shallow dish with fresh water should always be available. Air temperature can range from 70-80 degrees. Small crabs (1/2 to 1 1/2 inches) can be easily kept in a large goldfish bowl. Always hold crabs greater than 3 inches by their shell, behind its opening.
